SpiceJet is set to become the first airline to start a daily non-stop flight connecting Delhi with Pakyong (Gangtok) in Sikkim from January 23.
The budget airline was awarded Pakyong under UDAN 2. The Pakyong airport is the only operational civil airport handling commercial flight operations in the state of Sikkim. The airline will deploy a Bombardier Q400 aircraft on the Delhi-Pakyong-Delhi route.
At the moment, one has to fly to Bagdogra airport in Siliguri, West Bengal, to reach popular tourist destination Gangtok, which is a 123 km away and takes a four-and-a-half-hour drive to reach. Pakyong is just 30 km from Gangtok, which means you can save almost an entire day of travel by flying directly to Pakyong.
